Reseller VPS Software/Add On Installation
Since the installation of any software or add on is chargeable, you want to be sure that you do everything possible to help us
install and configure the application as quickly as possible. Here are some things you can do to help us.
-
Upload the installation files to your server and tell us where they are located
This is always a good thing because it saves time and avoids us having to find the software and download it ourselves.
If you purchase the software from us, or it's listed in the "Reseller VPS Add Ons" page, then we will already have a
copy of the software in our software repository.
-
Provide us with the necessary software licence.
If you purchase the software from us, or if it doesn't require a licence (please tell us that), you don't need to do this. If a
licence is required, make sure you give it to us. We will not install illegitimate software.
-
Give us the installation instructions
While we're familiar with the installation of a lot of software, you may ask us to install software we've never installed before. For
the software listed in the "Reseller VPS Add Ons" page, you don't need to provide installation instructions, but for other software
please make sure you provide us with installation instructions, including any necessary permissions that need to be set to make the
application work.
If the documentation is hundreds of pages long, try to condense it, or tell us the appropriate pages to view, or most of our time
could be spent trying to find the information - and we're sure you don't want to be paying us to read documents!
-
Tell us where you want us to install it
By default, we'd tend to install additional applications on the D:\ drive, but please tell us where you want us to install it
or that's where we'll place it.
-
Make sure the software is compatible with your server operating system
Your server will be running Windows 2003 Server Web Edition with IIS6.0 web server.
Please make sure the software will run on that Operating System and web server.
-
Make sure the necessary language is installed on the server to support the application
Even if software has a Windows 2003 version available, make sure it doesn't require any other language support for it
to work. For instance, if the software requires PERL to work, make sure you ask us to install PERL first.
-
Make sure all other software required to support the application is in place
For instance, if the software requires a database then please make sure you have access to the appropriate database before asking
us to install it.
-
Give us a link to the developer of the software and any support email, knowledgebase, or support forum they have
This is important because installation instructions are often not as complete as they could be, or else permissions
need to be altered to make the software work. Resolving permissions errors is one of the most time-consuming elements of installing
software and can take a long time to trouble-shoot.
Just because an application installed on your local PC or server easily doesn't mean it will install on your web server without problems.
You web server runs tightened permissions and security, and unlike a local installation where you may have access equivalent to an Administrator,
the application on your server needs to operate with much stricter permissions and security or else your server becomes vulnerable.
-
Be aware of the security implications of installing this software
Some software is poorly written or else has known hacks or bugs. You need to be aware of this and be sure that the
application you ask us to install is free of all potential security holes. If your server is hacked because of a bug or vulnerability
in the software, it's your responsibility.
-
Make sure you keep the software up-to-date with the latest releases and patches
You need to be aware of any new releases or patches for the software that are available and make sure you ask us to update your
installation - don't forget the documentation on HOW to do the upgrade.
